Medicare Basics

Original Medicare has two parts: Part A and Part B.  Medicare Part A provides you with hospital insurance.  You are automatically entitled to this coverage based on your age (65+) or a disability.  Medicare pays 80% of Medicare approved charges after you satisfy your annual deductible.

Medicare Part B provides insurance to cover doctor’s services.  To receive Part B coverage, you must enroll and pay a monthly premium to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  If you would like more information about Medicare, visit Medicare’s website at www.medicare.gov.

Medicare Part A Covers

  • A portion of the inpatient hospitalization after a deductible and coinsurance payment
  • Care in a skilled nursing facility (limitations may apply)
  • Hospice care for the terminally ill
  • Home healthcare benefits with no limits as long as Medicare requirements are met

Medicare Part B Covers

  • Doctor’s services
  • Outpatient hospital charges
