Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. These indicators apply to pneumonia that started prior to hospital admission. Although children also can develop pneumonia, current nationally endorsed indicators apply only to persons age 18 or older. These indicators examine the initial care of pneumonia patients, and the extent to which the hospital staff help the patient prevent future lung problems.

| Pneumonia - Oxygen Assessment |
|
Number of pneumonia patients per 100, who were assessed for oxygenation (level of oxygen in the blood) within 24 hours prior to or after hospital arrival. Early assessment helps with earlier detection of an insufficient oxygen level in the blood.
Technical
Includes inpatients discharged with a principal diagnosis of pneumonia. Excludes patients transferred from another hospital, patients who had no working diagnosis of pneumonia at time of admission, and patients admitted for comfort measures only.

Technical
Includes inpatients discharged with a principal diagnosis of pneumonia. Excludes patients transferred from another hospital, patients who had no working diagnosis of pneumonia at time of admission, patients admitted for comfort measures only, and patients who did not receive antibiotics or a blood culture.

Technical
Includes inpatients discharged with a principal diagnosis of pneumonia and a history of smoking in the prior year. Excludes patients transferred to or from another hospital, patients who died or left AMA, patients who had no working diagnosis of pneumonia at time of admission, and those admitted for comfort measures only.

| Pneumonia - Initial Antibiotic Received within 4 Hours of Hospital Arrival |
|

Technical
Includes inpatients discharged with a principal diagnosis of pneumonia. Excludes patients received in transfer from another hospital, patients who received antibiotic within 36 hours prior to arrival, patients who had no working diagnosis of pneumonia at time of admission, patients admitted for comfort measures only, and patients who did not receive antibiotics during hospitalization.
