Compassion and Understanding

At the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center, we’re more than an impressive building filled with advancing technology, sterile labs, and complicated equipment. The plaques and awards hanging on the walls cannot reflect everything you’ll find within.

Our Cancer Center is filled with the compassion and understanding that can only come from individuals devoted to helping people and families deal with the reality of a cancer diagnosis. Behind the friendly faces and encouraging smiles are real people who are willing to reach out to you and your family at this difficult time.

We know, when cancer enters the picture, lives may become disrupted, fear often sets in, and answers may not come quickly. We will walk with you through this experience, paying close attention to your needs and helping make the necessary steps as comfortable as possible for you and your loved ones. We want to get to know you.

Cancer Care Expertise

We are most certainly dedicated to our professional expertise and realize the importance of receiving care in an uplifting environment. And we’re just as determined to help our patients live normal lives as much as possible during the time they’re a part of our Cancer Center family. Yes, some days may be tough, but we’ll be right here with you each step of the way.

We’re pleased that the Cancer Program at Avera Queen of Peace has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons and received their Outstanding Achievement Award for providing high quality cancer care to patients and exceeding the CoC Approval Program standards. We work everyday to live up to this prestigious award.

The Cancer Center staff includes a two medical physicians who specialize in Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, as well as additional professional staff who provide personal, caring services. Charlene Berke, RT (R)(T), pictured below, is Director of the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center.

Treatment Philosophy

Located adjacent to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital makes the resources of an entire health care system available. Our philosophy of comprehensive cancer care means that every necessary medical resource will be utilized to help patients return to health. This integration of services and technologies enables our cancer care team to provide a wider range of treatment options right here in Mitchell. Our care is coordinated with all departments, including Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Rehabilitation Services, Nutrition Services, Social Services, Chaplaincy Services, the Hospitality House, Home Health, and Hospice Care.
