Avera Queen of Peace Special Services

Avera Queen of Peace Hospital offers a variety of special services to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. You are welcome to use the following services:

Chapel

The Chapel is located just off the lobby. Individuals of all faiths are welcome to visit the Chapel for worship services, prayer and meditation. When worship services are scheduled, a notice will be posted on the Chapel door. Holy Communion is distributed daily to Catholic patients by Chaplaincy Services personnel and/or volunteers.

Mail

Letters for patients are delivered each morning by volunteers. Letters that arrive after a patient has been discharged are forwarded to the patient's home. Stamps and stationery may be purchased in the Gift Shop. Outgoing mail may be left at the nurses station or given to a volunteer.

e-Cards

Online greeting cards may be emailed to the hospital and volunteers will deliver them to patient rooms. To send email or an e-Card to a patient, please see the panel on the left side of the Avera Queen of Peace homepage.

Notary Public

The services of a Notary Public are available on workdays at no charge to patients for hospital-related services. A fee will be charged for requests concerning non-hospital related notary services. For more information, please ask your nurse.

For the Hearing Impaired

A headphone amplifier and telephone amplifier are available to help hearing-impaired patients. TDD phone access is present in the Admitting Office. Arrangements can also be made to have a person who uses sign language help a hearing-impaired or deaf patient.

Interpreters

If a patient neither speaks nor understands English, the hospital offers interpretation assistance for most foreign languages. For more information, please ask your nurse.

Avera Queen of Peace Hospitality House

The Avera Queen of Peace Hospitality House, located at 600 East Sixth Avenue in Mitchell, offers comfortable, affordable, home-like lodging for patients and caregivers. Located near the Avera Queen of Peace Cancer Center and Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, the Hospitality House allows patients to stay in Mitchell to receive the care they need, without the burden of traveling long distances. The facility is especially intended to provide lodging for patients who are receiving cancer care; however, it is also available to those who are scheduled for same-day surgery, women experiencing pre-term labor, patients scheduled for rehab and/or other frequent outpatient treatments.

To reserve a room at the Hospitality House, you must be referred by one of the following Avera Queen of Peace resources: the Cancer Center, Central Registration, Chaplaincy Services or Patient Services. Your physician or his/her office staff may also provide a referral for you.

Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to those receiving cancer treatment or those traveling from out of town. Patients and their caregivers may stay at the Hospitality House regardless of their ability to pay. There is no set fee for staying at the Hospitality House. We welcome donations; however, donations are not mandatory. Guests are encouraged to give whatever they can afford and if possible, to give a greater amount in order to help make up for those who cannot afford to donate.

Reservations and arrangements for special check-in times may be made by calling the Hospitality House at 605-996-8291, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Hospitality House is closed on weekends and holidays.

Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee provides education and serves as an advisory group on ethical issues. The committee is available to assist patients and their families, as well. For example, if you are asked to make decisions where there are no clear-cut answers, such as whether or not life-support systems should be used or withdrawn, the Ethics Committee may be called on to provide support and further information that can help you or your family make the decision. Please ask your nurse to have a social worker contact you if you are interested in meeting with someone from the Ethics Committee.
