Chocolate, Red Wine and Flavanols for Heart Health

Avera Queen of Peace Hospital is sponsoring "Go Red for Heart Health" on Tuesday, February 10, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the MTI Technology Center in Mitchell. This entertaining and free event will feature samples of heart healthy beverages and snacks, including red and white wine. A representative from the American Heart Association will be present to provide information. Staff from the Avera Heart Hospital will provide information on Planet Heart, a cardiovascular risk reduction clinic which offers a full spectrum of services targeting cardiovascular disease prevention.

At 5:45 p.m., Avera Heart Hospital dietitians Nikki VerSteeg, RD, and Joanne Shearer, RD, will entertain and educate about the heart protective flavanols in foods such as chocolate, berries, tea, and red wine. At 6:30 p.m., Cardiologist Michael Hibbard, MD, Cardiologist of North Central Heart Institute will discuss current heart issues including an innovative procedure that involves hypothermia and methods for reducing your risk of heart disease. Following his presentation, Dr. Hibbard will be available to answer questions.

This educational and entertaining program is offered at no charge as part of Avera Queen of Peace's commitment to improving the health and well-being of residents of Mitchell and the region.
