Breast Care

Avera McKennan and the Avera Cancer Institute have the resources and specialists needed to help fight breast cancer. Our caring family of medical professionals work together to make sure you get the best care possible.

All women are at risk for breast cancer. In fact, one out of every eight women will have breast cancer during her lifetime. Breast cancer now causes more deaths among women than other cancer except lung cancer. More than 40,000 women in the United States die of breast cancer each year.

Many early breast cancers are curable. The key is early diagnosis.

Diagnosis & Treatment

At Avera McKennan, we know that more lives will be saved if women have a personal breast care plan that includes mammography, clinical examination and self-examination.

If breast cancer is detected early enough, chances of successful treatment are excellent. Women are also now able to choose treatment that does not require removal of the breast because their cancer has been detected in the early stages. Our state-of-the-art radiology and diagnostic imaging capabilities help us detect breast abnormalities before they become life-threatening.

The Breast Care Center at Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center is part of the Mid-Life Program at the Women’s Specialty Hospital and Clinics, as well as a participant in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP). We are also a host of the annual Race Against Breast Cancer, which raises funds to promote breast cancer awareness and to offer patients financial assistance for exams and other needs.
