Avera McKennan Stroke Center
The Avera McKennan Stroke Center is the first Primary Stroke Center in the state of South Dakota certified by the Joint Commission. Our Stroke Center also holds a five-star rating for Clinical Excellence in stroke care from HealthGrades. We provide an integrated and comprehensive approach to stroke care. Our dedicated staff are trained in early and appropriate diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, home care and outpatient care.

The American Stroke Association urges you to learn the warning signs of stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 or your emergency medical services. Get to a hospital right away! If you notice one or more of these signs, don't wait:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
