Diabetes Symptoms & Risk Factors

It is important to be aware of the symptoms of diabetes so the disease can be identified before causing serious harm. It is also possible for you to help prevent type 2 diabetes before it begins by being aware if you or a loved one are at greater risk for the disease.

Warning Signs of Diabetes

  • Increased thirst
  • Slow healing of cuts or sores
  • Frequent urination
  • Frequent infections
  • Increased hunger
  • Problems with sexual function
  • Feeling tired
  • Dry, itchy skin
  • Vision changes
  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
  • Sudden weight loss

Risk Factors for Diabetes

Certain people are at a greater risk for diabetes. You could be at risk if you:

  • Are over 40 years of age
  • Had diabetes during a pregnancy
  • Have family history of diabetes
  • Had a baby weighing over 9 pounds
  • Don't exercise much
  • Have stress from an illness or injury
  • Are overweight
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are of African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American or Pacific Islander descent
