About Avera Institute for Human Behavioral Genetics
One of the first genetic research programs in the state of South Dakota, the newly-developed Avera IHBG is the premier research center. James J. Hudziak, MD, internationally-known child psychiatrist and genetic researcher from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands serves as a scientific consultant. IHBG is a global program that seeks to create solutions addressing the genetic and environmental influences on child and family health.
Our mission is, through the use of careful behavioral, environmental and genetic assessment of children, families and communities, to reduce the burden of emotional and behavioral illness in our community.
This type of cutting-edge research has come about only in recent years since the mapping of the human genome. We look at gene sequences within the human genome. While the use of genetic profiles has long been used in the field of physical medicine, this work is still in its infancy in psychiatry.
IHBG research will seek to create a more complete understanding of an individual’s genetic profile, interaction with environment and resulting mental health. Ultimately, this research could lead to a better understanding of major mental illnesses, more precise dosages in drug therapy, personalized treatment for mental illness and more effective preventative strategies.
