Medical Experts Available For Heat-Related Medical Stories

This time of year, there may be need for medical expert advice for heat- related stories. The Avera McKennan Emergency Department is fully-staffed with professionals that can assist in answering any questions relating to medical treatment for heat-related conditions and prevention, such as:

  • How do you know if you are suffering from heat stroke?
  • What are the symptoms of dehydration?
  • What extra care is necessary for kids and small children during hot weather?
  • What special needs do elderly people have during hot weather?
  • For people attending JazzFest and state softball tournaments in town this weekend, what should people do to be able to withstand long periods of time in the heat and sun?

The Avera McKennan ED is a fully-staffed operation 24/7 with a physician always available and a specialized trauma team ready to respond immediately to emergency needs. Avera McKennan is one of only two Level II Trauma Centers in South Dakota--as verified by the American College of Surgeons, providing 24-hour coverage in key areas and the trauma surgeon is always prepared to respond prior to patient arrival. Avera McKennan 24 hour coverage areas include: Anesthesia, Respiratory Therapy, Laboratory, Radiology, Surgery and Chaplaincy. Avera McKennan Special Care Units include: Surgical, Neuroscience, Burn, Hyperbaric Oxygen, Intensive Care and Pediatric Intensive Care.
